Culture Aangan is dedicated to the
preservation of art and culture, traditional customs and lifestyles
of India through various developmental projects in sectors such
as tourism, revival of local art and folk culture and women's empowerment
and education. In 2005 Culture Aangan was set up as a private organization
comprising a 3 member core team.
Our Pilot Project
In May 2005 our pilot project was in the sector of culture tourism
in Sindhudurg district, which is the southernmost region of the
coastal strip of Maharashtra State.
The Government of India officially declared their support in
developing tourism in Sindhudurg.
So in keeping with the Government's declaration, Culture Aangan,
as a private body evolved a concept to promote tourism, which
also safeguards the pristine beauty and cultural ethos of the
district before it got too late!
Our underlying motive is to create tourism infrastructure in
Sindhudurg, with precedence given to economic benefits and independence
for the local people, wherein they can retain their land and
earn a livelihood through their homes and services offered in
the native villages. Thus was born, the concept of creating
a network of home
stays options in Sindhudurg.
Other Initiatives
While the home stay project was being developed and executed,
in May 2006, another of our successful initiatives was the formal
opening of the Thakar Adivasi Kala Aangan, an art arena,
created by Culture Aangan at Pinguli
in Sindhudurg. Here we have attempted to revive and preserve
a dying folk art tradition and have created a platform for the
traditional artists to pursue their age old craft.
In April 2007, we launched a project under the name of Hirkani,
wherein women's self help groups across Sindhudurg prepare traditionally
prepared food stuff, which is packaged and retailed under the
brand name of Hirkani. This project is now run and managed by
the Konkan Gram Vikas Mahamandal (KGVM), a non profit apex organization
established to promote economic development in Konkan
Our Future
In the past 2 years Culture Aangan has grown from strength to
strength and each year it has undertaken new and sustainable projects
with grass root level development objectives in mind. Our future
projects include creating and marketing designed lifestyle products
using traditional Pinguli art and craft in urban and international
markets.
